My friend gave me a canon 50D but I think it would be better to trade it for a 5D. What do you all think?

I believe he may be referring to the look of the files that come out of the camera and how the noise is much more film like compared to some crop sensors and newer sensors. That and the fact the 5D is full frame so sort of comparable to 35mm format. Canon 6D - Canon 1D Mk III - 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II | Σ 105mm f/2.8 | Canon 400mm f/5.6L | Σ 35mm f/1.4 | 17-40mm f/4L

If you need high-ISO capabilities, go with the 5D. The 50D goes up to 12,800, but that setting is quite useless for most non-recreational photography. Oh yes, the 50D does have a 6400 setting. The 5D will be better at 3200 than the 50D is at 6400, I am sure. My 5D has less noise at 3200 than my 60D does at 1600. The noise it does produce at that level is finer and less blotchy. And the 60D is better with noise control than is the 50D. Once again: if you are after IQ, go with the 5D.

I preferred the 5D by far, so I don't agree that the 50D is better in every way. If you need the more modern tech like a bigger screen, sensor cleaning, and higher FPS then maybe the 50D would be better for you (I found that I didn't miss that stuff much when I switched). But purely for image quality and FF look, the 5D won hands down. Purple fringing and amount of noise at high ISOs seemed to decrease significantly going to the 5D. and I love shallow DOF, so it was nice getting that look without having to take a step back and lose bokeh like I would with a crop to fit more in the frame. 5D Mark III - 35L ii- 85L - Sigma 50 1.4

If you expose properly the 5d I have does a better job than either the 7d or t2i I have owned. For portraits and landscapes the image quality advantage hands down belongs to the albeit aging 5d.
