With a recent aquisition of a 400 2.8, I'm moving away from my standard body + Sigma 120-300 2.8 setup to a dual body setup (400 + 70-200 2.8) for most outdoor sports. Having gotten use to the 5d3 for high ISO stuff, I don't think I can go back to anything less, so the plan will be to work with 1 body only for night/indoor sports (which I'm fine with). A 1DX, 1DIV or another 5d3 isn't in the cards for me right now.

WIth that in mind, I was ready to pull the trigger on a 1d3, which I've shot with before and loved. I love the 1d bodies (I'm still tempted on a daily basis to trade my gripped 5d3 for a 1dIV) and they're going for a little over about a grand now, which I was fine with. My other option was the cheap route of a 40d, which you can snag for about $250-$300 now and which I've also shot with.

However, considering used camera prices in 2013, is there any better deal than a used 1d2 for $350-$400? I've never shot with one, but that seems like a no-brainer over a 40d or 50d and for daytime stuff, seems like it would be just as good as the 1d3.

I just went from a 2 to a 3 and it was well worth the price difference (about $400). FPS, better AF customization and waaaay better high-ISO performance. And if you're a high-speed shooter, the increased buffer capacity is worth it alone.

The 2 and 2n are great for someone getting started in the 1D world, which I was when I got mine and the woman I sold it to is now. If you're already shooting with a 5D3 and have the skill to make that body work for you, then the 1D2/2n are going to feel very antiquated in your hands. Go with the 3.

I have a 1D III and two 1D IIs and I still grab the 1D IIs first.

Thanks for all the thoughts/suggestions guys. I think I'm just trying to justify (to myself at least) the option that will provide the most utility for the price. I've actually been very close to picking up each of the bodies mentioned (1d2, 1d2n, 1d3) several times, and keep talking myself out of each one.

More than likely, I'll end up starting with a 1d2 since they can be had for next to nothing and trying it for a couple games. If I like it and it get's the job done, end of story. If I like the performance but want the extra bells and whistles (bigger screen / lcd), sell it and go for the 1d2n. If I don't like the performance, it makes choosing the 1d3 that much easier since I already know that it will work for my needs. The second body will probably only be used for 5-10% of my shots, so I just need something that get's the job done. If this were my main body, there would be no question that I'd go with the 1d3.

I really like my 1DII but the buttons take a bit of getting used to. It is a real winner for the low budget setup.
