I have a longer trip upcoming and want to do cityscaping and assorted other non-people, non-wildlife things. I posted about the 16-35 in a different thread.

Now, I've been nice and sold some unused gear and I could use it to upgrade a bit before the trip. Would you do it? It's on a 5d2.

Currently I would take:

  • (core) 17-40 f/4 L
  • (core) EF 50mm 1/1.4 very-much-non-L
  • (core) 70-200 f/2.8
  • (special use) TS-E 45mm
  • (special use) 135 f/2 or 85mm f/1.8 [low light]

I am toying with upgrading this to:
  • 17-40 ==> 16-35 f/2.8
  • EF 50mm ==> Zeiss f/1.4 50mm
  • TS-E 45mm ==> TS-E 24mm
  • [rest identical]

It's not just more money, it's more weight and now I have a manual focus 50mm in there. It seems a bit questionable to me whether the picture quality is really that much better to warrant that trouble. On the other hand I hate that Canon 50mm. Trains will be a focus and what could be better than a Zeiss for photographing railroads, right? Oh wait no AF so it better be standing trains. Oh wait I use the TS-E for that.

Would you do it?

My imagine composition sucks. I need a heavier lens.
