I am shooting short clips, getting ready to edit and put together a number of short (3min) videos. I am currently using a Canon HF M500 video cam/on board mic. As you can guess, the audio is mostly bad. So, I have pretty much stopped narrating as I shoot.

I have a nice PC which was built a short while ago for photo editing.
I have a 7D/5D3, but have not used them for video.

I am considering a mic to be plugged into my PC to narrate the videos as I edit them.

Is this a good way to do it?
What mic would you suggest? (I do not know costs, but I am open to moderately priced suggestions)

Thanks

Blue Mics are very decent variable cost USB mics...seen here.
There are also alot of 3rd party vendors for the mic as well.

Thanks Coda
I just did some research on this mic and it seems most are happy with the quality. I may give it a go. Just one nit for me - it is pretty big and will take up quite a bit of tight desktop space I have.

If you have an iPhone, this is pretty useful:

I have seen that in other travels along the net.
I am a guy who likes dedicated equipment for specific uses. I have a difficult time trying other methods...just my makeup I guess.

Personally.. I'd get an interface and use something like an SM57.

Cannot go wrong with that combination, the SM57 is not only a great microphone, it is very rugged as well.

Whats the most you would be willing to spend on such a setup? What kind of budget do we have to work with here?

The budget is being stretched.
I am interested in the mike for my desktop - possibly that same mike could be used with the video cam??

I am in the market for a new video cam. I have outgrown my Canon HF M500.
I am in the market for around $2000 for the video cam.

I also am thinking of a crane/jib - something like 5 or 6 footer, for around $600-$800

The answer for a mike I guess is around $200. I have been looking at the Tascams, I am a little leary about all of these purchases being so close to each other and the $$ amount

Any other suggestions for me to think about/research?

Thanks for all the help already, I appreciate it.

You can have a superb mic but if you have a poor environment to record in you are still going to get a poor recording....although the ambient noise will be of much higher quality.

I have some nice mics which are rendered almost useless because of ambient noise.

I have seen what some do to their space to help the sound. My videos are important to me, but I am not going to that extreme, I would hate for my wife to boot me out. :o :D

My computer is in a small office (11 x14). I was thinking of hanging a couple of blankets when I do the recording. I am not too concerned, I just don't want tinny, hissing, strange sounds bouncing around in the small room.

Maybe this would work.

I have a Yeti from Blue and LOVE it! Nice clean audio. Can change your recording pattern as well.
