Uuuuuuuuugggggggggh! I dropped this lens tonight and now the manual focus ring is slipping. Auto focus seems ok (need to test tomorrow in better lighting), but turning the ring manually does nothing. I'm assuming this isn't a cheap fix? Looking online, I see people doing the repairs themselves, but I don't think I'm that brave.

Sorry to hear that. Check ebay for component prices. I've read of people replacing front elements before cheaply so it may be a cheap/easy fix

I just had Canon repair focus slip on a different lens. $200. Probably not worth the factory repair cost for an 85mm!

Good luck. Let us know what you do.

My first couple of keepers with the new 85! Happy to join the club!

I used 2 of my 3 kids as test subjects.

Hi Brandon,

Are those pictures cropped or full size? Oh, I C you are using APS-C.
With FF, you don't get such tight shots.

Thanks guys. I watched a youtube video of someone fixing a similar problem on a 50mm 1.4, and it seemed a little daunting (ie. it involved small tools and no duct tape). Maybe I'll stick it out with the AF-only as long as it still works and save my pennies.

The lens is selling for $400 in Canada now, so it won't totally break the bank if I have to buy another.

Maybe slightly cropped, but yes, aps-c. Going to be a little tough to get used to. I would really like to get out and get some better light but time/weather hasn't really cooperated much since I got the 85 AND my indoor subjects don't really like me following them around with the camera too much. These two shots are minor miracles!

I'm hoping I can move to FF sometime in the next year or so! :)

Here's a shot taken after the lens was dropped... taken at 2.0, still seems sharp on the eyelashes so I'm feeling a little more relieved.
