Great Sand Dunes (b&w)

mind sharing your conversion method? I've been looking in to other options and methods for my own.

I use Silver Efex Pro 2 (Nik Software) for conversion, then play around with contrast and levels. It's amazing for black and white photos.

How did you protect your camera?

That second shot is stunning. Looks like it was well worth the hassle.

I love that area. I spent 3 summers during college mountain guiding there, from '79 to '81. I've been across the dunes from the back to the front (~10 miles +) more times than I can count (or care to remember). This was back before it was a national park, and there was no such thing as a "lodge". Although the Oasis was there.

Nice thing about being there on a windy day is the lack of footprints. One set makes for nice leading lines. Many sets makes for a ruined picture

The color pic by Spotz04 is level. That's the Crestones in the background (Peak and Needle, both 14ers), and the ridge in the middle goes up the Sand Creek drainage.

Kept it in the bag when I was getting pelted with sand. Only took it out when I was in the clear. Still got sand on it though. Luckily my Nikon D600 is weather-sealed.

I don't mean to be a stickler but are they crooked or not? Check out the mountain range in the background (on the original two)... just trying to help!

I don't think they are. You can't really use a distant mountain range for leveling a pic. They look fine to me, but maybe you're right.

I suppose you're right, the two shots are absolutely stunning either way, I love the tones. There are too many lines for that to really matter anyways.

Two great shots! I have a slight preference for #2.

Gorgeous shots...both of them. At first I gravitated to second...but now falling for the first.

I drove right by these dunes last October and didn't stop. I was going straight for the bright yellow aspens. Kicking myself now!

Beautiful B&W conversions though.
