Whenever I upload a photo for my school's website, the image uploaded loses contrast and saturation. Nothing should happen to the image since I'm simply moving the file to the server. Example:

Image uploaded

IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: 404 | MIME changed to 'text/html' | Byte size: ZERO

The original has more contrast and saturation. Anyone have a solution? The original looks much better.

EDIT: I just also noticed that the same thing happens when I open the image in Imageready. But in Photoshop cs2 it looks fine.

Can someone explain whats going on?

Your images might be in the wrong color space. Make sure they are sRGB and not Adobe RGB. This can be changed in your camera settings if shooting in jpg. If you shoot in RAW, then you can choose your color space when converting.

Weird, I shot in AdobeRGB but in photoshop color settings it says sRGB. So how can I fix all of this to where they show fine on the net?

Well, I shoot in RAW and when processing the image in CS2, right before I save the conversion, I choose sRGB from the pulldown in the lower left side of the convertor.

For JPG, I think you can goto Edit -> Color settings.

Yes, after I go to Color settings it says sRGB. I'm confused.

I had the same problem a while ago. It was cured when I switched to sRGB in the RAW editor.

...I downloaded your image and it does appear much better when viewed locally. I still think this has to do with the color space, but I don't know how to fix it on JPGs.

I downloaded this and it is in aRGB. Convert it to sRGB before posting it to the net and all will be well.

How do I properly convert it, because my CS2 says it's already in "sRGB IEC61966-2.1".

Under the edit menu is the convert to function.

Or browse with a color managed web browser :-)

You can see if your browser is color managed here (external link).

Ahhh thanks! Can you see the difference?

I have another question - How should I lower the file size for web viewing? I always use "Save Optimized" in Imageready CS2.

Looks good! For smaller sizes, just use save-for-web in photoshop. Pick Jpeg and choose 'high'. It is good quality and usualy keeps 800px images under or around 100k.
