I recently bought a MT-24EX to go with my 100mm macro with the thought of buying an MPE-65 within the next few months. I am having a bit of a problem with the MT-24EX and I’m not sure if I should chalk it up to the flash or to the use of it. Meaning- should I return it for replacement? First off- I know it’s harsh. I bought some Stofen diffusers to cut through and provide somewhat softer light. I am aware it has a bit of a curve to use it properly. Before buying this, I used a 580ex with a diffuser I had made to throw light for my macro shots. I mostly shoot 1:1 in manual focus, manual mode (1/200, f/13, ISO 100) and with the 580ex have mostly used E-TTL, depending on the subject. With the 580ex, I usually had to set the FEC to +2/3’s, +1 stop to get enough photons to shoot through my tube diffuser in order to properly light my subjects. This tended to get properly exposed shots. Occasionally, I did shoot with the flash in manual, especially for certain flies that would liftoff with the first strobe of the E-TTL process. On to my MT-24EX. I’ve shot many of the same things I have shot before, but I cannot control the E-TTL to a usable setting. I’ve cranked it down to -3 FEC and many times the pictures are horrible over exposed- to the point where the RAW files cannot even be edited to an acceptable picture. For the time being, I am shooting in manual on the flash. However, there are times when I would like to use E-TTL as a quick, go to shoot without having to fiddle with manual. I don’t accept that I just bought a flash the can only work properly in manual. Any thoughts? Thanks!
