Hey guys, I ordered a flash and I'll be buying an umbrella/stand as well so I can do some proper portraits. But before I get them, I just wanted to try some with just regular light to see the difference when it all gets here. CC welcome. If you could advise me where the umbrella could be placed in these shots to create a better portrait, it would be appreciated and I'll try it when it all arrives. Thanks guys!

Beautiful fiance'

To start off, research Rembrandt lighting and short lighting. This will get you started as to light placement. Short lighting is very important. Put the light to the side that her nose is pointing towards and at about a 45 degree angle and slightly above her head height (to simulate natural light direction). Let the shadows fall across the face lighting the short side and shadowing the broad side (side most seen from camera angle). This will be more flattering on a female.

Rembrandt and short lighting.......that is what I would study first.
