Found this large and healthy looking Wolf Spider chillin' in my house the other night. Always happy to see a wolfie, but my wife prefers them outside (and dead). So after the shoot, I released it into my wood pile.

5DIII + 100 f/2.8L + Speedlite. One-shot AF.

Great shots, how do you get him/her to stay still?

I have a large, shallow box of dirt, rocks, and wood that I use for shooting critters like ground-dwelling spiders and scorpions. You just have to wait for them to stay still long enough for a shot. Some things are just too quick and skittish to shoot in their natural habitat (although I prefer that).

Fabulous shots, Moose. The box with dirt, etc is a great idea. Love that last shot immensely!

If logic had prevailed you would have released it into the wood pile and then stood on it :)

Wonderful captures.

Cool shots, Moose. Will you show us your box setup? I'm envisioning a box with 2' high sides and not figuring out how you get the camera at the proper angle.

The sides are probably about two inches high; one of the boxes you'd get at the department store when you buy clothes... kind of flimsy... folds flat. The sides push down easily, so you can get a low angle with no problem. A little awkward to carry when it's full of dirt and stuff; helps to put a board beneath it.

We love our roach-eating wolfies here in Florida. Clever little critters, too. If they were the size of dogs we wouldn't have human over-population.

Canons to the left, Canons to the right,
We hold our L glass toward the light,
Digitizing in a snap reflective glory
That will forever tell our imaged story.

Scary thought, right there.

Speaking of roach-eating critters: over the past two years we've noticed a dramatic drop in crickets and roaches in my area, which sounds good, right? Until you consider the reason;... an explosion in the scorpion population.
