I was thinking of offering it: To go to the hosp and do a session there within the first day or so.
My bro had a baby and there was a photography service offering this. Seems like a great thing to offer new parents.
Also seen some midwives offer the service right after birth.

Anything I need to be aware of?
Tried to think through potential obstacles. I cant see how it "wouldnt be allowed" since patients can have visitors and plenty take pics already. But here's to finding out what I dont know :)

I've been a part of many births at different hospitals in my area. Each hospital had their own designated photographer that goes through all the rooms and offer a photo session in the room. What I've noticed is that all the photographers have entry level gear, often kit lens. They do have a speedlite which they all aimed straight forward instead of bouncing.

Thanks for the reply. I have seen some things where it looks like a chain type thing in hospital. I wasnt wanting to specialize in that specifically, I just wanted to offer it as part of a maternity package option: That I could come and get some of the first photos. I just wasnt sure if there were some legalities before I offered it. I would think not since they can invite any guest in. I just was not sure.

Don't think there's any problem with you doing that. Where's I'm from, if you give the staff your camera, they can even record/take pics during the birth from their position. don't think all hospitals/staff would even do that.

When the hospital photographer offered to do my nephew's hospital photos, I told my brother to just say no and I would do it better later. :P

My wife did in hospital baby photos for a while, for a company that had contracts with a few hospitals.

While she enjoyed doing it, she hated the lack of control she was given, everything was preset cookie cutter photos (shoot this, with these settings, then this, then that, then change to these settings, and shoot this, this and that)
She also hated using their entry level camera (not that there was anything wrong with it, but she much prefers "her" 1Dmk4 and 24-70)

Here in Los Angeles, the hospital photography thing is dominated by two companies: Bella Baby and Our365. They are chains and they pay their photographers not so well from what I've heard. If you cna find a hospital that isn't already under contract, go for it.

So if the hospital is under contract a person can not have me come to take their baby pic? This is what I'd need to know. I want to offer it in my baby package. It seems they'd be allowed to have guests, but I was not sure. I am not wanting to work for the hospital on their end. But I just wanted to know any "precautions" before I put it in a package.

Hospital photography has become big business, very much like school photography.

We just had a son in South Korea and they actually took him away for an hour. I didn't know why (no one could speak English) so I went looking and found him in a room with a photographer taking photos of him :)

They actually gave us a big print free of charge and included a special offer brochure for us to take him to their studio for a photo shoot in the coming weeks.

Quite a good business model if you can get in to it I suppose!

Wow that's cool and yah that sounds like a real good business opportunity: give someone a nice print and and invite! That's a good idea.

wow those are so cute! Thanks for sharing. So I guess the people hired you to do that and there was nothing you had to worry in regards to the hospital? You just showed up and did your thing?
