My answer (external link).

Thanks for that. Food for thought, and beautifully expressed sentiments, all around.

The literary equivalent of an extreme photographic gear-head would tell you that you failed to follow one interjected phrase with a comma, and used the word "worse" where you needed to use "worst," and therefore your entire article is less than perfect, and therefore, moot. :)

Studios should be equipped with a first-aid box for minor accidents, plus basic headache remedies, tampons etc. On an early catalogue shoot of some cheap, poorly made lingerie, I misidentified a loose white thread and smartly tugged a tampon out of the model. It shot off like a little rocket, coming to rest inside a reproduction Tiffany lamp.

That would lead to a double negative! ;)(But then, this is the digital age!)

I like to see it as enhanced reality or augmented reality...:) We can't photograph what is not there, happening before us, in reality.

Why do people say that it isn't the gear that makes the photos look stunning?

It's gear that gives you bokeh.
It's gear that gives you bounce from your flash lite.
It's gear that gives you soft boxes for soft shadows.
It's gear that allows you to go ISO 3200.
It's gear that allows you to remove oblique reflections using polarizing filters.

Gears are important in photography!!
Especially software for post-processing.

Just my 2 cents ;)
One just needs to learn how to hold the camera steady and properly expose the shots.
Angles and compositions are really just creativity added to the mix.

And all that doesn't mean anything unless you have the skill to use it.
