Dear Board,

I just picked up a 1DMk11 and while I love the camera I know I am going to miss the 15-85 IS USM I used for a walk-around lens on my 20D. The 20D isn't going anywhere so I still have it available to use but I was wondering if anyone cared to suggest a walk-around lens for the 1D body as schlepping 2 cameras everywhere isn't all that appealing to me?

I'd like to stay in the $ 250.00 +/- price range, and since I am shooting with 10 year old bodies I am definitely not afraid of used lenses, nor am I put off by 3rd party lenses. I would prefer to have a FOV equivalent to 24mm or something close to that. I'd like to find a 20-35 USM f3.5/4.5, but they don't seem to be all that common?

The lens will be used for scenic and landscape photography, f2.8 for indoor use is not a requirement.

Does any one have any suggestions? Also, can anyone tell me with reasonable accuracy just how much of the wider end of the range is lost to vignetting when an APS-C lens is mounted to a 1D series body?

I'm trying to decide if it would be worth buying any of the far more common 3rd party APS-C wide-angle zooms? If they typically work without losing too much of the wide end I will consider buying new, but I don't want to only get 1/2 the zoom range.

Regards,

Tim Murphy :D

I'd suggest a good old EF 28-105 3.5-4.5. They were pack in kit lenses for a lot of cameras, and you should be able to get a good deal used or refurbed, if you can find one. It's not quite as wide as you'd like, but things inside your price range rarely are. The 20-35 is a cool lens, but uncommon and not cheap.

I wouldn't bother trying to mount the EF-S lens on the 1D. The larger mirror will slap the rear of the lens, unless you perform some surgery on the protruding element. Some vignetting is expected when using something very wide, but it would be considerably worse with an EF-S lens, provided you could get one that cleared the mirror.

There are some 20-35mm USM's on ebay right now: http://www.ebay.ca …om=R40&_nkw=canon+20-35mm (external link)

The Canon EF 22-55mm is cheap and wide and was actually designed for the EOS IX APS-H film camera: http://www.ebay.ca …_from=R40&_nkw=ef+22-55mm (external link)

The Canon EF 24-85 works well on a 1.3 crop: http://www.ebay.ca …mm&_osacat=3323&_from=R40 (external link)

The Tokina 20-35 is pretty good: http://www.ebay.ca …om=R40&_nkw=canon+20-35mm (external link)

The Tokina 19-35 is also good: http://www.ebay.ca …om=R40&_nkw=canon+20-35mm (external link)

You can use a Canon EF-S 10-22 from about 14mm-22mm on a APS-C with NO vignetting at all but it way above your price range. See this thread: https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1287430

Dear Mike and Kelly,

I spent some time reviewing the lens sample archives here on POTN as well as assorted on-line reviews of several of the lenses that you recommended and decided to purchase both an EF 28-105 f3.5/4.5 and the Tamron version of the 19-35 f3.5/4.5. As best as I can tell the Tamron is the Tokina is the Vivitar is the Phoenix and they are all made by Cosina, I might have left some version out but all the published specs seem to be indentical.

I wanted to get as close to the same FOV as the 15-85 provides on my 20D and the 19-35 will be almost the same on the 1DMk11.

While I am at it Mike, I'd like to thank you for the recommendation you made a few months ago on a thread by another board member of the Canon 70-210 f3.5/4.5. I picked one of those up based on your comments and I am very pleased with how the lens performs on both my 20D and 1DMk11.

Thank you both,

Tim Murphy :-)

You might be able to find an older Canon 17-35 f/2.8 used. I actually had this lens for years and "upgraded" to the 16-35 f/2.8 II, which was a mistake, I actually like the look of the older lens better. Great walk-around range for the 1.3x crop.

Two and a half year old thread, Andy. The guy's probably already made a choice.

On the 1.3x 1D bodies, i always favored the standard FF lenses, ie: 24-70, or 24-105 and 17-40mm f/4L (dirt cheap used these days)

The APS-H is really closer to the FF sensor than it is to the APS-C sensor.

24-105 spends 75% of it's time on my 1DV. The other 25% is my 100-400 II. I can't seem to let go of my 24-105, I just like it that much.

Tim's last post was a month ago, so as of a month ago, he was still around. And he appears to have quite a selection of older lenses.

Dear Board,

The 28-105 USM is my walk around lens for the 1DMK2. I do spend most of my time chasing deer, birds, and other assorted woodland creatures so the Sigma 150-500 spend a lot of time on the camera too.

I'd like to get a 1DMK3 some day but for now I am still quite content with the results I get from the MK2. Maybe it's my imagination but when compared to similar shots taken with the 40D the files from the MK2 seem to have considerably more depth to them. That might not be the correct terminology but I do know that the MK2 files are much more 3 dimensional and colors and contrast are more striking at default settings than what I can attain from the 40D.

That's not a knock on the 40D because pictures I've taken with the 15-85 come very close to the pictures I get from MK2, but telephoto pictures taken with MK2 are head and shoulders above what I get out of the 40D. I wish APS-H was still around so that they could introduce a newer model and drive the prices of the remaining used MK3's and MK4's down to my level!

Regards,

Tim Murphy :-)

Well, the prices for a decent 1D IV are around $1000 to $1500 than they were last year at the beginning of November, at least here in the States. How do I know? I looked at a 1D IV at that time but ended up with a 7D2 because of price, mainly. My 7D2 developed some issues lately.... so it's back at Canon. In the mean time, I picked up a 1D IV so I would still be able to enjoy getting out there.

Anyway, prices are getting more affordable.
