HI Everyone, I have a 5dII an some nice lenses. These are really nice, I'm not complaining. My problem is that my equipment is heavy, both my backpack and sometimes my camera depending on what lens I'm using. I would like a small camera that is both good and compact. One that I can whip out at any second and fire off some shots. I want something small, quick, good, and convenient. Well maybe not good but best. Any suggestions?

i love my canon powershot S95. almost like a mini DSLR. takes great pictures, and has built-in HDR capability. another great compact body would be the panasonic DMC-LX5.

or you could opt for the canon EOS M, which is apparently selling at newegg right now for $450.

Thanks for responding! I went to the Canon site and could not find the camera you suggested the S95. Is there something that is similar? What do you think of the Sony RX100? I would like to find something with a larger LCD panel as well. Thanks

The S95 is the older model. Then came the S100. The S110 is the newest and still a good bet. I picked one up locally a few days ago for under $350, tax included. Most pocket cameras utilize a 3" LCD screen.

I have been very pleased with the performance of the SX50HS which I got for my son, the budding birder in our family. That's a superzoom.... smaller and lighter than a DSLR but basically the same form factor.

If you are looking for pocket size, I think the S110 is very highly regarded, but I have no first hand knowledge about it.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

a proven performer. the S100 was released shortly after i got my S95, and initially i had the upgrade itch, but after reading reviews on the S100, was led to believe i was better off staying with the S95. i haven't done any research on the S110 model.

example images from my S95

I don't think you're going to get small, quick and good in a compact. I think you can get small and good but quick has always been a downside.

That being said, I also have an S95 I picked up recently and enjoy it very much. Because you have a full frame camera, don't expect IQ to be near your 5D II.

Given your criteria in order I'd look at Fuji X-E1, Fuji X100s, Fuji X-Pro 1, (No budget specified so Leica Mirrorless), the Canon Rebel DSLRs with 40mm pancake, Olympus OM-D, Sony NEX series

Reviews of Mirrorless cameras, some in relation to DSLRs: https://www.youtube.com …t?list=PLC88374B45704052F (external link)

Zack Arias's takes on Fuji cameras: http://zackarias.com/?s=Fuji (external link)

And of course the internet is filled with reviews on the whole list.

For my money, I'd go with the newest Fuji with interchangeable lenses and add a few X mount lenses (wide prime, standard fast prime, medium tele macro) as time went on, however for me it's a want not a need so I get selective about lenses and occasionally ungrip one of my bodies and have been able to get small enough combinations that I can bring the camera where I want to go.

I would say Sony RX100 too.. it has a 1" sensor.. and the body is pretty tiny.
kinda perfect for your purpose. Image quality is better than S95 S100 S110.
And almost the same size. but its very pricy.
Or if you poop money, you maybe wanna look for the Sony RX1.. fullframe compact cam. :P

I agree. RX100 is clearly the top "pocketable P&S". You just have to be OK with the price.

I've only played with an RX100 in the store, but it's incredible. If I valued pocketable point and shoots, I'd have it. But my S100 gets me by just fine.

How compact are you looking for? There's always the choice of an m43 - I like the Olympus line.

I wish there was more competition, it has been almost a year and the price is still full MSRP!

Thanks everyone. I'm not too familiar with Fuji cameras, so I think I will stay with the cameras I know something about. I'm torn between the RX110 and the Canon S110. I think
"dipps" had some real good photos using the S95. Since the Sony RX110 is quite a bit more than the Canon S110 in price, does the increase in quality of the photos match the difference in price?
