The 35L and the 50L both produce ~1.5% of barrel distortion. So they are virtually identical as far as that goes.

So I disagree that the 50 is better because the 35 distorts people. They both have identical distortion.

Thomas, I think Lloyd is referring to linear perspective distortion - caused by being very close to the subject, not barrel distortion which is caused by rectilinear correction within the lens.

In any case I don't see any FL as being right or wrong. Just decide what AOV and magnification you want for a shot. And even that doesn't make as much of an impact to my eyes as does lighting.

My bad.

I couldn't decide so I use:
24LII
35L
50L
85LII
all at once

Here's some photos I did over the weekend when I used all of the above except for the 35L:

50L:

I've always been told a 50mm lens on a ff camera sees the world much the way our eyes do.

I like the 85/35 combo. What I really like is that pair of lenses with one FF and one crop. With those two bodies, I essentially have a 35, 50, 85, and 135.

If I had only FF, I would probably shoot 50, and 135, but I'd probably want a 24 or something pretty wide in the bag.

35-50-85 for me.

This is the combination we use as well.

35 for the photojournalistic kinda shots
50 for close up portraiture work indoors
85 for portraiture work outdoors

I would like to add a 135 as well at some point.

interesting chat around focal length.

for me, its simple. i skip the 50mm. only have the 24, 35, 85 (in mail), 100 primes.

1. space is the first deciding factor. in a close small room - 24L will be handy. Tried the 35L but want to have more things in a frame. ignore the distortion by just placing subject more to centre.

2. outdoor - think i will prefer the 85. if i want to have some Landscape in photo, i will pick up the 24. if not, i prefer the 35 with 85. currently working on 35 with 70-200.

cheers.
Scott
