Crop, crop and crop some more. Your subject gets totally lost in that vast expanse of of black.

her expression, pose, and dramatic lighting isn't very congruent

First, exposure. What are the brightest parts of this photograph? The bridge of her nose (T zone) and her L breast. If you want her to be the subject a la portrait, bring her face back to camera, have her 'connect' and diffuse that specular on the chest to drive focus back to face. Also, I'd go for softer light all around with a nice fall off. You have hard shadows on her nose and left cheekbone, neither of which is pleasing.

If, however, you really want to place with negative space, I think you (a) over lit her and (b) have a non-meaningful pose. In this case, I would use a 10-20 degree grid spot and make her appear as if she is being engulfed by the black void of space (or whatever). I would just want to feintest hint of her facial structure. But that's just one mans opinion.

Good points mdzukunft, but I'm, wondering shouldn't her L breast have a red ring?

Congruent?
I agree with Woolbur - too much black space. It's too late to fix the harsh improperly positioned light; but next time put another light on her hair so it doesn't fade away in shadow and have your main a little higher up.

Since you have so much empty black space, maybe you could go all black and white. Maybe try adding a light source on the left that's casting the light on her? Maybe keep the source of light unknown to add a bit of mystery to the scene. It's too bad that she isn't looking straight ahead though.

Just a thought.

The mystery of the light...is that an oncoming train? a car? is she being interogated by the police? :D

My attempt :) Please ignore the pixelation..... :P This is just for example :) I was thinking some kind of floral spiraling design coming across the image.... threw that on to achieve the 'feel' of it.

I cropped the photo a bit. Raised the temperature, and added a little sharpness to it

Black and white edit looks cool. The other edits look a bit cheap and cheesy.
