Can't re-find this. Read it on some blog last night but it could be just someone talking through their hat. I assumed if there was any truth to this posting it here would yield some knowledgable posts. Obviously its a non-runner

1Dx firmware was updated to AF at f8 and the 5D3 is due for an firmware update to do the same. Nothing I've seen about the 7D.

As much as I would love to see this happen I just don't believe it will. I think focusing up to f8 would be a feature Canon would save for the 7dII.

Not mine.. can't get it to AF with pins taped or non reporting TC with my 400 f/5.6L. It just hunts and hunts and never locks focus.

My 5d III does great with the pins taped :)

And this is exactly why a firmware update will not make a 7D AF @ f/8, because it simply can;t reliably do it.
It does not have the 1D af system that was designed to do it.

Yup, I agree 100%. I do sometimes wonder what it is that prevents it though. When I had my Pentax system (ist DS, K10 and K20) it could focus at f/8 without much issue. Now we know the Pentax AF was worlds behind the Canon AF (even the one in the xxd line) but it is something it could do without any issue.

I even managed a few BIFs with it LOL

It wasn't designed... it was released without the capability, then later they released a firmware to make it happen.

the 5D3 still can't not until it gets the update.

If canon wanted to they could make it work.

No, they released a firmware update that enabled a feature that had been included in the original design. All the firmware in the world cannot add a capability that the hardware is not capable of, and the 7D hardware is not capable of reliable focusing at f/8.

The 6D is supposedly getting firmware to focus @ f8. Sure that's not what you heard?

I got a beta release of the new 7D firmware and now my 7D can make a great pot of coffee.
