I recently purchased a Sunpak Ultra 757TM tripod as I really wanted a 72 inch tripod. The tripod itself is just fine as it's sturdy with my 7D on itand I like the built in monopod. The head however is crap as it's wobbly no matter how much you tighten it down. The reviews on B&H seem to match my experiences as several users have swapped a Bogen head onto it. I'm not sure if I need a ball head as my main uses for it are fireworks in the summer and dog sled demo photos in the winter. I tend to set the elevation and then just pan as needed.

Does anyone have an idea what would be a good head to look at? Preferably less than $100 but I can go over that if the head is worth it.

Well, I looked at the tripod specs on B&H and it says the head is not interchangeable:

One of the reviews does mention swapping out the head with a $50 Bogen head (read the review from Dave under customer reviews). The head does unscrew from the base (I've done it) and it's a regular screw on style (looks like it's about a 1/4 inch without measuring it).

I am pretty sure it is not only the head that is wobbly, putting a sturdy head on an inexpensive tripod will not improve your cameras images, nor protect it against a knock or freak gust of wind.
There are numerous reasons why people spend large sums of money on tripods. Your camera cost around a $1000, it deserves better support.

Actually the tripod itself was very stable on a windy day in the forest preserve last Saturday when I was testing the setup.

And the people who spend large amounts of money on a tripod probably use them more than 6 or 8 times a year like I do. My old tripod was also inexpensive and works just fine other being a bit short.

The main issue I've seen with the head is some looseness at the base where it attaches so I wonder if a slightly longer mounting screw or a lock washer to keep it from coming loose may fix the issue.

If the head unscrews and there's a mounting screw underneath, you can attach any head that accepts that screw size. Get a good measurement and order any head you want.

That screw IS a 1/4" screw, so get any head you want to, I have a 7000 model
