excellent product at a super price. puts my pricey domke inserts to shame! this insert fits perfectly in my small backpack (the north face jester) and in my domke satchel and it easily fits my 5d III with 24-70L II mounted, 70-200L F4 IS, 16-35L II and 28 f2.8 IS -- and the top still closes!

best 16 bucks i've spent on photo gear in a long time!

Ed, why do you say it puts your Domke inserts to shame?

thicker, the partitions can be configured, the top closes, cheaper. a very well thought out product for "today's" lenses. and in the center pocket i can store my 5d3 with 24-70L II installed and the dividers fold down to protect the camera.

now take a look at this domke insert which i own.

http://www.adorama.com/DMFA230.html (external link)

cheap, flimsy and i had to cut out one divider if i want to carry a bigger lens like the brick (!) or the 100-400L. plus the domke has no padding on the bottom or a closing top. no way i could carry a camera with lens install in the domke insert which i have owned for about five years.

in comparison the domke insert is an overpriced, inferior product probably designed back in the days of FD lenses.

of course if you prefer a more minimal insert the domke is better but i was pretty dismayed that the pockets were too small for the brick unless they have changed the design since i bought mine a few years back.

Right on. Sounds like a good deal. I haven't seen those Domke ones in person and had no idea the dividers were fixed in place. I've been mostly looking at the Tenba and Timbuk2 inserts which seem pretty similar to the one you posted, but more expensive.

Well, I've got several 720-230 inserts that take my 24-70 no problem. And the latest design of the Domke inserts has fully adjustable partitions. They changed that a year or so ago.

with hood reversed? not one of my domke inserts will take the brick with hood reversed. even the 70-200L f4 IS with hood reversed fits so tight it makes the adjoining pockets smaller in my f1x.

Yep. Hood reversed. And the 70-200 f/2.8 IS in the other end of the insert (with a Sigma 15-30 in between).

i think my inserts were made for fd lenses :D. i plan to use the new insert in a backpack. i had to use my REI points and there was a 20% sale so i went that route instead of buying a dedicated backpack. the great thing is the backpack gives me room for other things too.

at the risk of disagreeing with a 20,000 post member, i'm not as enamored with my insert from this vendor.

actually it's for all the opposite reasons that ed loves his, i think it's actually too bulky compared to the domke, and the material sits a little loose on the foam, i do like the closure on top though.

but it's hard to criticize for the price, and functionally either one works for me. i guess the takeaway is that some people like chocolate, some people like peanut butter....

both of my camera bags are Domkes but i bought this insert for a backpack. i am going to use the insert with my Domke 802 for a quick trip to washington state rather than carry the f1-x. it makes the bag bigger as the other fellow stated but it also allows me to carry all my essential gear well-protected as well as my ipad and all the damn cords and chargers that i need these days :D.

so Jon which modern insert should i get for the f1-X?
