5d3 - Would you recommend a grip?

Soooo I have been talking about getting a 6D with my wife, but after telling her the difference in the focus system she went online and purchased a 5d3 for us

With my 60D I always hated how small it felt and how my pinky kind of fell under the camera. Adding a grip helped a lot with that.

How is the 5D3 with this? Is it kind of the same where it is a little to small to fit a whole hand on it? Would you recommend a grip for it? I know with the 60D it added quite a bit of weight, I can imagine it will be more so with the 5d3. I will also be using a long lens on it (Canon 70-200 2.8L IS II).

It does add to the weight but I love the grip. I have not taken it off since. It just makes balancing easier, and much more comfortable in portrait orientation. But the double battery life (if you have a second battery) is one of my main reasons for it. My pinky finger now has a more comfortable place to rest, too.

The 5D3 is actually quite a bit bigger than the 60D. I was surprised at how much bigger when I went with my friend to buy him a 60D. It felt tiny compared to my 5D3.

I would like a grip to help with shooting in portrait orientation, but I don't want to add the extra weight and bulk (and it wouldn't fit in most of my bags), not to mention cost.

I've used a grip on my bodies since the 20d - it just feels better in my hand. It is a little heavier, but after putting a 70-200 the weight difference is negligible

I always add a grip, but I also have relatively large hands. I don't like how the lower right corner digs into my palm on longer shoots and the extra buttons make portrait much more comfortable. More weight for sure, but I don't mind that. The small size is actually the main reason I'd never buy a mirrorless camera, even with a grip it's too small for comfort.

I think the grips are all similar in size, just hold your grip (or mount it if it fits) to your 5D3 and see. Should give you an idea.

Too bulky and heavy for me. Plus, do not want to lose the space in my bag.

Ergonomicly this is the best grip canon has made yet. I wish they would redo the 7D grip now!

On a personal level I have gripped all my bodies as I find the bodies easier to hold and easier to keep steady (thanks to the extra weight) especially with long lenses. Additionally when walking around I find it easier to hold the camera with my hand around the grip. I should say though I have hands the the size of spades.

Okay, well it appears that the 5D3 will benefit from the grip just as much as my 60D did. Thanks for the help guys! Its nice always being able to count on all of you .

I really liked the grip when I had my 5D3. It gives the camera body a overall well balance feel to it. I definitely recommend it.

yup definitely use the grip, and now that they have the joystick on the grip too it's even better

I definitely enjoy the grip on my 7D. It's awesome.

I have battery grips for my 5D3's but only use them for sports when I'm using the big white lenses (400 f/2.8 IS) and shooting vertical a lot. For general use, I prefer not having a grip.

No grips for me... they flex more than you think. If you shoot any kind of landscape/longish exposures they ruin more shots than any advantage to balance/battery life you get.

If your shooting a lot of portraits hand held, then a portrait grip is a good idea. Otherwise, it's not necessary .
