I am looking for a bag where I can have my 500 mm lens plus 1DX plus laptop plus a bit more and it should fit airline carry on size. Any suggestions, I am thinking of Lowepro Vertex 300 but what other options are there?

i was able to fit my 500L and body separate, hood reversed, inside the XL ICU in a f-stop tilopa.
did not try my laptop... being it's a 17" laptop.

I've picked up one of these http://www.calumetphoto.com …olling_camera_case/rm2202 (external link) recently and I absolutely adore it, its deffo UK airline hand luggage approved so I'm assuming thats the same for you guys the other side of the Atlantic.

There are a small number of niggles with it but nothing a sewing machine hasn't fixed.

Lowepro ProRunner 450AW? I have both this one and the Vertex 300, if your laptop is less than 17 inches the ProRunner should work, otherwise the Vertex.

You've seen my solution. The stripped down rolling luggage I brought to Africa has been used half a dozen more times since then. I have gotten a LOT better at packing since Africa, which was my first such trip, but the basic premise remains.

Official overhead certified rolling luggage, strap 500mm down the middle to the aluminum rails that the collapsible handle goes into, and surround the whole thing with the rest of your gear wrapped snugly in a few changes of clothes.

Day one on location, unpack gear from carry on. Unpack the bag/s you want to work out of from your checked bag, and get set up for adventure.

Part of the theory involved here is that any bag made that works well for carry on, is next to awful to use as a working bag. So don't even try.

Africa, Ecuador, Galapagos, Peru, and several in country flights, and it's still works great, and it cost me about $50.00 at WalMart
