Hi all.

I recently bought a 5d and when I put the files on my computer there is a padlock sign on the files. A google search indicates this is something to do with read/write access. I can access and process the files but the properties do indicate that there is stuff ticked that normally are not ticked on files from my other cameras. I have a few Canon dslrs and none of the others files act like this. Has anyone any idea why the files are different from the 5d? Thanks

A. What operating system?
B. When you view the files where? In what application? Explorer? Finder?
C. Jpg or CR2 or both?
D. "... the properties do indicate that there is stuff ticked that normally are not ticked on files from my other cameras." What "stuff"?

I would guess its something the previous owner has done but forgotten to remove. I wonder if resetting the camera to its default regime would correct the problem?

The camera does have a "Protect Image" function that marks a file as read-only, but I think that has to be applied manually on a per image basis and there is no possibility to set it to be "always on".

Thanks. Tried a reset and its still the same.

Its jpegs and raw. The security settings have an access permission tab. In this section all but the bottom tab "special permission" are ticked in black on the 5d files. Thhese normally are ticked but its a lighter grey tone.

I am using widows 7 64bit and its only if I open a folder in windows to see the file tabs. It probably makes no difference but is different than any other files from other cameras.

The protect for 5d photos is indeed applied individually.

Thanks

This sounds like the general rules and permissions scheme of Windows. Sometimes it can go wonky and apply security settings to an individual folder. I would suggest creating a new folder on your desktop and upload a few files to it from your 5d and see what happens. Also, try moving the "padlocked" files to another folder and see if you get a message stating that you need permission to do this. If you get this message, your problem is with the permissions on that folder.

If you have added any new hardware (HARDDRIVES) and installed an OS or programs recently you may have to tweak the permissions of files that are getting stored on the older drives in your machine. I recently installed a SSD and had a similar issue which was resolved by changing the permissions so that the Programs on the new SSD could access old files stored on a partition.

Hope this helps,

Windows 7 files with padlock icon are private files in a non private folder (for example C:\Users\Public\Public Documents). You are the only person who can access (read/write) the file. No other users or groups have permission on the padlocked files. Where do you store the raw/jpg files? I'm guessing you have them in a shared (public) folder.

Thanks but no new software. it only does this with files from the 5d. The 7d files go the same place and no padlocks

Its in C:\Users\myname\desktop and then the pictures folder in libraries. I might have to give up trying to figure this one out, its just a bit strange. thanks all
