Great shots! If you don't mind, can you explain your lighting setup for each? Which modifier? Also are you using an ND filter? Thanks!

Edit: Just saw your setup in the HSS thread. Question about the Rovelight 600. Do you need a special mount to use the PCB 47" Octa? Which model would one need to order? I have a lot of PCB gear and it would be great if I can use it with a Rovelight.

To be honest for the racing shots where I can take 2k a day I set the body to TV and let Canon's expertise sort the rest out, it hasn't failed me yet. I used to shoot just RAW and manual everything but seriously - life's too short! Canon have spent millions of pounds / dollars / yen etc perfecting their algorithms so why not take advantage of them?

If I wasn't running on same/ next day deadlines then it would be a different story but with a 'normal' day job as well time is money as the saying goes.

Why do you ask? are they really that bad?

He's shooting in Tv mode, at a slower shutter speed as to capture some movement/motion of the wheels and background. It appears to be a bright sunny day so the camera automatically narrows the aperture. He's already down at iso 100.

No, your shots are good, that is not the reason I asked.
I don't shoot sports/racing myself, but I am confused by the high f number used.
Yes it is clear, in TV mode camera would set aperture and ISO and that might be the reason why it is high f number.

I am just thinking that shooting wide open (low f number) maybe would look more appealing with more subject isolation? Again I am not sure but usually almost everything looks better with a shallow DEF :p
Have you tried shooting in M (manual mode) with Auto ISO? Just set the shallow aperture and desired shutter and let camera figure the ISO?
Again I am not a sports shooter (meaning I have no idea what I am talking about) but I would use a higher f stop only if I wanted a panning shot (meaning using a slow shutter speed) and even at ISO 100 there was too much light ans closing down the aperture was the only choice ...

Well, maybe you should give that a try?

You will find out that just getting the front bumper of the car real sharp is often times not really cutting it....

Cheers.

Superb capture Mark and a great story that raised a smirk - it always amazes me how un-observant the non photographic population are.

I think these guys have terrific expressions of wonderment.
