Very nice, you were pretty close no?

Thanks, about 12 feet away, it's a fairly heavy crop.

Spent a few minutes this morning watching the amazing flying skills of a group of Swallows as they hunted insects on a nearby beach:

Mark, that's fantastic for 200mm. I too was stuck with the 70-200mm on the 5DIII today when I spotted a swallow's nest while waiting for my car at the garage. I was kicking myself that I didn't have the 100-400 with me. I didn't get anything as good as this!

Thanks Annie. I've found that relatively shorter focal lengths work better for me with fast birds in flight. The 70-200mm is a good choice because of its great IQ allowing images to be cropped quite heavily and still look okay. When the subject is small in the frame it's easier to track (as oppose to something filling the frame) especially when it flies erratically and changes direction frequently, as Swallows do.

You are probably correct, Mark - I wasn't looking at it that way! Here's one of mine. I just had a bright grey sky as a backdrop, so not very interesting.
