Red Fox

While having breakfast this morning, I saw this red fox cruising the hardened snow in our back yard. As luck would have it, I was forced to shoot at close range with 700 mm, but I'm still very happy with the result. My suspicion is that he is on the hunt for some of the chipmunks that have recently and prematurely come out of hibernation; I wish him luck in his pursuit.

Beautiful shot. I have never photographed a fox, but I sure love seeing photos of them on here!

I've only seen foxes here in the early AM (3:45AM to be exact) and I've been on the way to work. I saw him/her off an on for a few months but it was completely dark out and the fox just ran across the road in front of me, visible only because of the street lights.

I've never had a chance to photograph one but I'm sure it would be exciting. I love those surprising moments when something cool shows up unexpectedly and I have my camera nearby.

Very cool photograph. I'm assuming you had your 500mm attached along with the 1.4X extender?

Thank you all very much. I know we have them in the neighborhood, because I often see their tracks. But I only generally see them in spring and early summer when they are hunting hard to feed their kits. We have had the cross fox version around here as well and I've managed to photograph it a couple of times too; they are real beauties in black.

Thank you, Terry and Ian. At first I thought I'd have to shoot through the window, but I couldn't get a bead on it. So then I ran to the bathroom and opened the window when I saw it heading that way. I had the camera all ready and then squeaked like a mouse, stopping it in it's tracks and causing it to reverse directions toward, rather than away, from me. It worked like a charm, I'm happy to say.
