I have the B&W 10-stop ND filter that I used when I still had my Sigma 10-20mm. I'm also planning to buy an ND-4.

I've been eyeing on a couple of specialty wide angle lenses, mainly the Samyang 14mm and the Tokina 16-28.

Since they both have bulbous front elements, I was wondering if I can just HOLD the ND filter in front of the lens during the long exposure and achieve the same result as if I had screwed it onto a proper 77mm ring.

Would extra light seep into the image circle through the openings of the pedal-shaped hood?

Just a thought, thanks!

I don't know, but lee do a filter holder for the Nikon that might fit other super wide angle lenses

because I don't have the proper-sized holder or filter threading, i've held and taped filters onto the front of my lens. for a bulbous front element lens, I would try to find a container or cup of some sort that has the right shape and cut it to fit (maybe a square tupperware container). then you can gaff-tape or paint it black so light doesn't leak in. yes, it's slightly ghetto. no I don't care :p

I have a coarse German description on how to use filters with extreme wideangle lenses (external link) - inside the camera mount! See the images - some would call this a "ghetto way" :-)
For the Samyang 14 I have estimated a needed front filter size of ~150mm for a even filter.

People have been hand holding, and or using gaff tape for decades.
Gaff tape by the way, should not leave any residue on your gear.

Really, this is likely the most common way it was done for most of the time photography and filters have existed.

Some have had success fitting a slim 82mm filter inside the hood of the Samyang/Rokinon/Bower 14mm, and possibly adding a bit of a filler substance (tape, blu tack etc) around the edge just to keep it tightly in place.
