Yeh...but how do they treat the bag in-between the time you give it to them and when they give it back. Ever see how they load up luggage?

this is a risk obviously, but if you watch them they will walk it down the stairs (or use the slide) and then place it on the plane, reverse when you land, so at least it doesn't go through the whole baggage handling inside the airport.

but even in this case i would not gate-check a soft-bag, only something like a pelican. i travel a lot, and i make sure that my bag will fit under the seat, that way i always have a place for my camera/laptop bag. even if i have to board last and all the overhead space is taken.

I'm traveling with all my gear in a Kata flyby 74 - 18.1 x 14.4 x 9.1. It is not filled as I don't have a laptop. Will the temperature change hurt the gear? Should I pull out all the lenses for the hour tip and put it in my backpack?

So I'm gonna take my kata for the first time. Anyone know if this fits in the Delta regional. I found the issue is my bag is 18.x14.4x9.1 but the Delta site advised 22x14x9. Dont want to check my bag.

They usually aren't that critical. It might not fit in the overhead compartment, and you may have to place it under the seat in front of you.

I have a fairly large Dakine that I travel with pretty often. I've had it not fit with the all my gear and laptop... at which point, I removed my laptop from the bag, placed the laptop under the seat in front of me, allowing the bag to fit in the overhead.

I measured my case 9.4 is full once I take out my laptop it measures 7-8 and the top and be squashed down. So I figure it will work once I get on the plane I'll remove the trolley inset part. Hope it I can get it on board.

I've flown 200,000+ miles in the past 6 years or so... I've never had Delta personnel measure or refuse any of my carry on items, and as mentioned above, some of them didn't fit in the overhead space. Depending on the specific regional plane type, the overhead compartment can be pretty limited.

I have used an F-stop Tilopa BC (I cinch it down to the pro ICU thickness and it fit fine. If you stuff it full, IT WILL NOT FIT) on the CRJ's no problem. That will carry up to their XL ICU camera insert. I usually put my laptop (15" macbook pro) in the bag until boarding time, then take it out and cinch the bag down. A little tight, but not too bad.

I've also used an airport ultralight from Thinktank (discontinued) and a fastback 350. While able to move a bunch of stuff, not that comfortable to carry for long periods once you get where you are going. That's where the F-Stop came in. Much more comfortable. I am also trying out the F-stop Kenti, and both Mindshift bags. I haven't tried the Mindshift Pro in an overhead yet, but I think you could squeeze it in. The Kenti and the Mindshift Panorama should fit with no problem.

My laptop is the size of the Mac book Pro, I'll take that out and throw it in my backpack before I get on the plane.

Black Pelican 1510 all the way! It looks small, is unassuming, lockable, and totally protects if you do have to hand it over to somebody.

When I know that I will be on one of those jets I take my pelican case with locks and check it at the airplane door. I also inform the guy loading that it has camera equipment in it and they give me the case back at the airplane when we land. So far I have not had any problems.

Same here. Pelican and tell the loader it's camera stuff.

Last year I took a Fastpack 350 on one trip, total of four Regional Jets. Each time the counter attendant checked my ticket at the gate they told me I would have to use valet. Apparently it looks bigger than it actually is. I just said OK and walked down to the plane and boarded. The flight attendant didn't say a word. I stowed it under the seat in front of me. It was a tight fit with a monstrously thick 17 inch Dell Precision laptop so next time the grip and L-bracket will be removed first.

I do the same thing with my ThinkTank Airport International. The gate keepers will see the wheels and hand me a tag for gate checking. I'll stuff the tag in my pocket and stuff the bag in the overhead. I've flown some really small regional CRJ's and have yet to meet an overhead that wouldn't swallow the International, ymmv.

I agree with Hollis. Their liability is strictly limited. You can sing for it.
