I went to use my camera this afternoon and as soon as I took the lens cap off it auto focused on something and started taking pictures. It wouldn't stop. I tried pushing different buttons on the camera but none of them responded. The only way to make it stop taking pictures is to turn the camera off. I can't open the menu or anything like that either. I had used the camera that morning with no problems. Anyone had this happen? I just got the camera a few months ago so it is still under warranty but I own a portrait business and don't want to have to send it in to get fixed and be down to one camera. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

it's broken... I think there's two possibilities, either the shutter button switch is jammed stuck (either mechanically or electrically) or the shutter itself is failing.

I'd vote for the former, because usually when the shutter fails that way you need to take the battery out to stop it...

Are you using a grip? if so try it without as it's been known to happen that they can get a bit weird.
Other thing you can try is confirm it's in one-shot mode.

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:
