Hi all, I am considering getting this lens to go with my 5d mii. I will be giving up a couple of lenses ie: 17-40 and 70-200 F4 non is for it. Any thoughts? Is it a worthwhile trade up? The reason is, is I would like "fast glass" for lower light situations, dont really care much for the zoom at the long end. The 24-70 2.8 goes for about $1200 used where I am, Toronto Canada.

Thoughts???

Thanx

I have the 17-40 and a 70-200f4IS. Other than that I have a 40mm and 100mm primes as my "fast glass." I would not trade my zooms for the 24-70, even if it was the mkII version. I just use the very wide end, and the 200mm end way too much. So I guess this is just a preference thing. If you want that 2.8 that bad, and wont miss the other focal lengths, go for it. Just saying.. I wouldn't. Id save up to get a couple cheaper primes to add to your 2 zooms.

40mm pancake is a fast lens and very compact and sharp for $150 new.

The 85mm 1.8 can be had for around $360 new. I seen one for a hundred less used in the classifieds today.

Just some thoughts.

I had one for several years, and it was a very good lens. If you are going to have a single lens on a FF camera, then the 24-70 is a very good choice.

Canon 24-70 is a great choice. The tamron 24-70 is probably a even better choice if you decide to go that route.

hmm, thanx for the responses guys, I was looking around the net and found on the Fred Miranda site that there is a 28-70 2.8 L as well. Looking at some reviews, it looks to be pretty good, its old but "L" lenses hold their value and are normally still good. It is also about $200 less than the 24-70. What do you guys think? I may have to move to this one instead.
