Alright all you photography experts, I need some input. I am going to be making a purchase soon here and want to know if anyone here has this combo and if so, what your thoughts are? I'm looking at the 7d + canon 400mm 5.6 non-is for birding photography. Now this is a huge upgrade from what I am using now, so quality of photos is not a concern. Does anyone have experience with this setup? Has anyone used a 1.4x tele with this combo as well? This really the only lens within my budget but I'm open to other combo suggestions. Thanks and good birding!!

Spencer

Excellent. THe 1.4x does not AF, but you really do not need it. With the 7D and the 400/5.6 is plenty.

You can use the 1.4x with the 1DIII;

I have this combo, it is very good. In low light you will need a tripod or monopod. There are posts on this forum about using a kenko 1.4 TC and it still autofocusing. Not tried it myself.

Get the lens for sure and the 7d is a great body.
For birding only you cant beat that combo for the money.

It will be an awesome set up. The only niggle is the mfd ( minimum focus distance ) From memory, it will only focus from 20ft onwards :)

Also consider 300mm F4 IS & 1.4x - that's what I went for. You get 420mm @ 5.6 with autofocus & IS. Closer MFD as well I think.

Cheers

Cameron

That's a great combo, you'll love the 400mm.

I have this combo, having made the choice between the 400 and the 100-400 as far as the lens component. All I can say is: superb-especially for bif. As mentioned, low light is a hurdle, but achievable at times.

Best setup for birding on a budget out there. I would skip the TC though, since you will lose AF, and shouldn't need it anyway.

It's a great combo! Very fast and sharp.
There will be times you'll want IS but only in low light, otherwise a tripod or monopod will be good.
I have a bunch of shots with 7D + 400L on my flickr.

I don;t have a 7D, but highly recommend this set up anyway. The 400mm f/5.6 is an amazing little lens. Super fast AF, and gorgeous IQ.
