I'm not sure if its my new (used) camera as the 622 is only going to work with one of my DSLRs (Canon Rebel XSi), the issue is over-exposure from the ETTL, I lower the exposure compensation, no changes... any ideas or anyone has a similar/same issue and have a resolution?

What is your shutter speed? What is recorded for the image? if you are trying to use this outside, as a fill flash, often you will over expose as the flash can't sync above 1/250'th unless you are in HSS mode.. and the camera knows this and will change the shutter speed on you down to 1/250th.

The other thing is to check out what metering mode you are in.. this will also affect what ettl will do.

Also, Auto ISO can bring in something to the problem.. do need to see an example pic and the settings to help the best.

There is a good chance that it is due to poor contact. Clean the five contact pins on the camera. Make sure that the 622 foot pins are free from dirt and oils. Ensure that the 622 is pressed fully forward in the camera shoe by pressing the foot forward before locking down. Repeat withe the remote622 and the flash. These problems can arise when new gear is introduced, and polish off in use.

max I can upload is two, but I got 12 samples I can show... if needed?

Note, when I tried manual it worked much better than the ETTL...

Everything shot manual, except of course ETTL.

Trying this as key light for subject while balancing the exposure for background with ambient.

Ambient + Flash = "normal" subject exposure. Your ambient seems high. How many stops down was the ambient set to?

Are you spot metering and re-composing? Perhaps using FE Lock?

I do not have this problem with 50D + 622s + 430EXII, unless I use inappropriate camera settings. Then, I can reproduce the effect you show. It is clearly not a full dump but a controlled level, so the poor contact is unlikely.

It could be as simple as the difference between Evaluative or Average. The latter removes the "smarts" of E-TTL.

If it is set to spot metering, even if you focus on the subject, and then recompose, the camera will meter the final position that the 'spot' AF selection point falls in. In both these cases, your center AF point would fall into deep shadow, so the flash would try to expose that shadow to mid gray. If your AF point falls on the subject, as the shutter is snapped, then you may have better results. If not, you may try evaluate metering instead of spot metering.

The other option is to Focus on the subject, and then before recomposing, set the exposure lock so the camera won't adjust for the recomposed frame for exposure.

Does this address the problem?

You need two triggers, one on the camera hot shoe, one on the bottom of the 430exII. I made sure the flash was in ETTL, and then I can use the back of the (50D) camera menu and set it to HSS.

Clive's most excellent YN-622 manual is helpful:

https://docs.google.com …FpqNkpBYXBHajA/edit?pli=1 (external link)

The YN-622 is also great to put the camera into HSS mode, and then you can full power an off camera flash and do hypersync/super sync it as well- IF the off camera flash has a long enough duration at full power. Same principle applies to strobes as well.

no, I shot them at spot metered, and no recomposing, as well I used selective AF focus points, but I'll try Evaluative metering when I get another subject to test on...

Thanks - look forward to hearing further.

Average E-TTL takes the light across the whole frame, so would try to lift the flash contribution to make the majority of the frame, the background, "normal". That will then over-expose the small subject area.

Evaluative E-TTL uses the multiple zones in your camera to identify the location of the subject, and calculate the light needed to make just the subject "normal".
