can you share how you did it?

ksbal has answered well.

One other possibility - the 622s need to be factory reset to ensure they are ready for action. (Page 7 - Factory Reset in TOYUG)

I tried retiring, but gave it up - it's a dead end

You need two triggers, one on the camera hot shoe, one on the bottom of the 430exII. I made sure the flash was in ETTL, and then I can use the back of the (50D) camera menu and set it to HSS.

Clive's most excellent YN-622 manual is helpful:

The YN-622 is also great to put the camera into HSS mode, and then you can full power an off camera flash and do hypersync/super sync it as well- IF the off camera flash has a long enough duration at full power. Same principle applies to strobes as well.

thanks. Will it work only in ETTL?

Also I have YN568EX and 430EX II, will it work in both flash simultaneously?

Yes and yes.. I used mine both manual and ettl and there is a mixed mode where you can do both.
(but you may have to change the flash settings at the flash, if it is a manual only flash)

If you have one trigger on camera, and one trigger on each flash.. you can trigger as many flashes as you have triggers for... and you can ettl with any compatible flash..and do groups with them as well... a compatible flash list is in the guide.

i like manual flash only off camera. I can have better control. So you can do manual on flash too, right?

I asked again because my first question is "Will it work only in ETTL?" and your answer is yes.

sorry noob here.

Sorry, my bad, it will work in Ettl, Manual and Mixed mode... all three.
The YN622 is a pretty sweet trigger, for the money. I wish the buttons weren't so easy to press, have to double check what channel I'm on as I'm constantly bumping the switch, but that is a small blemish on a very nice product. No way for me to own PW right now, so these are a very good option.

If you haven't checked out the guide yet, I highly recommend reading it.. most of your questions can be answered there.

I have a combo of rf-603 and YN622 triggers.. when I know I'm going to be doing a portrait, I tend to grab the 603's.. I know I'll be going all manual, and those triggers are just perfect for that. When I'm in a moving target situation, I go for the 622's. OR if I want to do HSS/Hyper synch.. 622's are the bomb.

Thanks - look forward to hearing further.

Average E-TTL takes the light across the whole frame, so would try to lift the flash contribution to make the majority of the frame, the background, "normal". That will then over-expose the small subject area.

Evaluative E-TTL uses the multiple zones in your camera to identify the location of the subject, and calculate the light needed to make just the subject "normal".

so you recommend Evaluative to get that known environmental portraits from HSS photography?

Chris - Yes for all E-TTL; HSS is irrelevant.

Because it uses your camera's metering zones, a slight re-framing can change the evaluation, which can be seen as "unpredictability". I find the benefits well outweigh that factor, and experience overcomes the variability.

Environmental portraits need carefuly settings for the background exposure, and some "head-room" for the added flash on the subject.
