Fort Lauderdale – The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will begin demolishing an out-of-service bridge connecting I-595 and southbound Florida’s Turnpike at 6 a.m. Saturday, April 6. Media is invited to view the demolition and of the removal of the beams between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. which is the best time for photos.
Access to the work zone will be available to the media for photos, videos and interviews with key project team members during this activity. Please review the following information for participation:
DATE: Saturday, April 6
TIME: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
LOCATION: There will be a tent setup on the southbound Florida’s Turnpike travel lanes, just south of I-595. To access the site, drive south on Florida’s Turnpike to the closed portion of the roadway.
ACCESS: There will be a law enforcement officer on southbound Florida’s Turnpike to allow media with credentials into the work zone.
Crews opened the new replacement bridge in this area on Friday, March 22 as part of the ongoing efforts to eliminate weaving movements at the Florida’s Turnpike interchange. The I-595 Express Corridor Improvements Project consists of the reconstruction of the I-595 mainline from the I-75/Sawgrass Expressway interchange to the I-595/I-95 interchange on I-595 for 10.5 miles and from Peters Road to Griffin Road on Florida’s Turnpike for 2.5 miles for a total project length of 13 miles. The project includes the reconstruction of the Florida’s Turnpike Interchange, the addition of auxiliary lanes on the I-595 mainline, operational improvements to frontage roads, the addition of braided ramps and bypass ramps between SR 84 and I-595, and a new reversible express lanes system in the I-595 median. The project improvements are being implemented through a Public Private Partnership between FDOT and I 595 Express, LLC. The lead contractor, Dragados-USA, is on schedule and expects to complete the project by summer 2014.
