Dear Board,

I recently picked up a 1DMk11 and I am wondering if there are any particular advantages or disadvantages when it comes to selecting media cards?

Just from looking around it looks like SD cards are a bit less expensive on average for a given capacity, but I have plenty of CF cards that I bought for use in my 20D that still work fine.

I am wondering if it matters which type of card I use, do any of you have a preference, and if you do why?

Regards,

Tim Murphy

The SD cards are so small I have trouble handling them.

CF = 43 x 36 mm. Type 1 is 3.3 mm thick and type 2 is 5 mm thick.

SD or any of the variations are 24 x 32 x 2.1 mm.

The microSD which uses an adapter and hence isn't recommended is 11 x 15 x 1.0 mm.

At 25.4 mm to the inch you can see the microSD is about the size of a postage stamp and may be what the previous person was referring to.

Another consideration is cost; excluding the microSD, the SD will cost less than the CF. Best Buy has a 16 gb Sandisk Extreme on sale this week for $20.

I'd go with using a quality CF card as it has a speed advantage. If the SD slot was compatible with SD-XC it would be a different story.

@ DanThoman how do you function in day to day life if you can't pick up and SD card? Are you sure your real name isn't Edward Scissorhands?

I had both in mine. As every once in a blue moon I would forget to put my cf card back in after transferring photos. Then get out to my shoot without it. No big deal when I had the SD card in for a backup! No my 7d is a different story...

El Pedro - I have a bad tremor and that small difference in size makes a big difference to me. Try putting on a heavy pair of gloves and insert/remove both cards. You'll see what I mean about the size.

This. And many SD slots "eject" the card; I've had them go flying when I went to change them. Good luck finding it if you weren't standing on clear ground (like up in a set of bleachers, or in an open field).

I always have both installed,

... but the CF card, especially on this camera, is always the "primary" card.

You're not supposed to push it down and let if fly, you know. I think I'd have to intentionally try to get my finger out of the way for that to happen...

Tons, on everything from laptops to desktops to P&S's to DSLRs... never had one "shoot out" on me yet.

I've had it happen but it's certainly not a game breaker. SDXC tech will drive CF into oblivion soon at a fraction of the cost.

CF Sandisk extreme pro 64GB $500 100mbp/s
SD Sandisk extreme pro 64GB $200 95mbp/s

Why canon continues with outdated tech is beyond me, if the made cars would they still be rocking tape decks?

We are talking in this thread about a camera that was released in 2004, when the largest SD cards were about 1GB and they were dog slow.
