I'm flying from San Jose to Seattle and the tripod is a gitzo 2541. We're only going for two days. In the past I've always put my tripod in checked baggage.

Thanks :D.

I have been carrying my F-Stop Loka with a Benro Angel tripod strapped to the side of the bag for the last few flights I have taken.

No issues so far. once or twice they have opened up the bag and swabbed my camer for explosives, but the tripod has not been an issue.

I've been carrying my Gitzo G1028 in my carry-on for 10 years without a single question. Honolulu to San Fran, Seattle, Portland, Vegas, New York, etc. Once TSA made me pour out my flask of Jack Daniels but they don't give a hoot about tripods as long as they in the overhead or under your seat. Starting 4/25 TSA will let you carry a folding pocket knife as long as the blade doesn't exceed 2.36." Not sure where they got that number but all my pocket knives are slightly too long...

2.36" is 6 cm., which is what the European agencies decided to allow; TSA is just bringing their standards in line with the Europeans. And, no, it doesn't let me carry my Swiss Army Knife.

thanks for the responses guys. I don't see any reason to pay $20 a bag each way to check luggage when we're only doing a flyby :D.

I think if you're flying CONUS it's not a problem and I've taken my tripod into the cabin without issues. International it's different: I keep the ballhead in my camera bag in the cabin and the tripod in my checked luggage.

I just flew to Belgium on Delta and did not have any issues. Same setup I mentioned earlier.

That is a great link.
I am going to be flying from NY to California soon and I was not sure what the deal was going to be.
I will have my camera bag/equipment, tripod and one bag of clothes - all carryon.

just a few of my thoughts...

I think the TSA is loosening up. I've got used to the tripod in the hold and it'll be there my next trip to Ireland.
