Does anyone know if it's possible to connect a 6D to a laptop if you are not on a LAN? I was able to connect to the camera and use the EOS Utility when I was at home on my home wifi, but I can't seem to get the camera to connect away from home. I was hoping the camera could act as the access point for the computer to connect to..

When using a 7D with a WFT-E5B, you have to do an ad hoc connection. That wireless accessory can't work as an access point
However, the extra user's manual, for wireless and GPS functions in the 6D, does list exactly what's possible. I know that, since I looked through it, but I don't remember every detail. It's available for download, if you haven't got it.

According to the 6D WiFi manual, you can connect to a computer using the Ad Hoc mode. This is the same mode that is used when using the WFT devices for the other EOS models to connect directly to a computer rather than going through a LAN. To use Ad Hoc mode, you have to set up your computer first as the access point and then configure the 6D to access the computer.

add for pacace comments,
it would be easy if you are using Mac, very simple to create adhoc connection using Mac

another solution is, get MIFI, there are lots of model these days

btw,
what is something that WFT can do and 6D wifi can not do ?

Actually, the reverse is true, i.e. what can you do with the 6D which you can NOT do with a WFT device. You can connect to an iPhone or iPad with the 6D. There's an app (from Canon) for the iPhone/iPad which allows you to connect to and control the 6D. You can't do this with any of the WFT devices yet, AFAIK.
