I am only a amateur, and have narrowed down two budget flashes, the Yongnuo 565ex or Yongnuo 568ex. They are both e-ttl, but the Yongnuo 565ex has connection for external battery and does not have HSS. Where the 568ex has HSS but no external battery connection. Do I need HSS, as I read that YN-565ex has sync of 1/2000, and YN-568ex has sync of 1/8000. Any help would be grateful.

P.S. Don't comment that I need a cannon flash, if I fill the need to purchase an expensive brand name, when I become more infused in this great hobby, then I will. As, too many amateurs, have expensive equipment and have no idea how to use every aspect of their equipment and never will develop that keen eye to become a great photographer.

The 565 does not have a sync of 1/2000 but 1/200th. I prefer the 568 over my 565 (have both). I use HSS pretty much with fast lenses.

Having owned a YN468II, I really hated that it didn't have HSS. It really comes in handy when outdoors in good light, but you want a bit of fill flash while keeping a shallow DoF.

Unless you shoot for more than 8 hours, an external power port is worthless. Even if you needed it, an extra 4 AA batteries is not that hard to carry.

Get the one with HSS

I bought an 568ex I love it off camera but just be aware I see you have an 60d with an 60d on the December version at least if you took a picture without the flash capacitor fully recharging the camera will crash with an error 20. You can turn on beep and just fire when its charged just wanted to give you an heads up. Also popup commander on 60d does not do HSS you will need to either get an 580ex2 to trigger via ir or buy TTL triggrs I hear that basicly only the 622c is comparable.

Cameras: Canon 60D and 20D

You can actually deal with any of those shortcomings.

You can overcome the use of HSS if you put a ND filter in front of your lens, so, if you already have a ND filter, you won´t spend any extra money.
And you can overcome the lack of external battery port by buying more batteries.

I have both units and I do prefer the 568... I find it better exchanging batteries than using an ND filter.

Photography is about GEAR and not talent or practice. Practice won't make you a better photographer. Expensive equipment will. =D

Like bonbridge said, the yn565 does not syne at 1/2000. It will sync at the max sync speed of the camera, which with that 60D is 1/250

I have the 60d and the 568 and I suffer the err20 from time to time. It's annoying but it always when I'm trying to shoot to fast and it's easy to fix (turn off camera and flash)

Really it's comes down to so you want an external battery port of HSS? Answer that and you'll know what flash you need.

Whichever you choose, be prepared to wait a long time to get it! I'm at 2 weeks for my 568 and it's not here yet.
