"Better than" is subjective to many an individual's needs. The focal range is relatively similar. Distortion, CA control and sharpness all appear greater on paper. The price difference tells the same story... jonathan @ tlcphoto.com

I know there are a lot of fans of this lens on this forum but I've personally never been overly impressed with it. The big third party players all make lenses in that range at that speed. Fuji convert - Ping me if you have any Fuji gear or legacy glass you're moving.

They do and many are really nice lenses but I think that none surpass the 17-55IS when considering the total package. Not sure why, but call me JJ.

The 17-55 blows the other one away. It's better in just about every respect except price. DreDaze wrote in post #15803536 some might say the sigma 17-50OS gives it a run for it's money...and at half the price... of course those with the 17-55mm will say that's crazy, but if you look around, there are plenty of spots where the sigma is shown to be sharper than the canon. As long as you get a good one. There are just as many tales of people having to try 2 or 3 times before they get a good copy with Sigma. I don't play the lottery game. Rick

PLS ADVISE LANGIN Please define "better". I can make arguments that the 24-105L, 24-70 2.8L, 24-70 4.0L, and EFS 15-85 are all "better", depending on what it is you are looking for. There is none better if you need an all-around lens. 5Diii | 50D | 8-15L 4| 16-35L 2.8 II| 24-70L 2.8 II | 70-200L 2.8 IS II |Tamy 150-600 | Σ35Art 1.4 | 40 2.8 | Σ50Art 1.4 | 85L 1.2 II | 100 2.8 Macro | Helios 44-3 58mm f2.0 |Helios 40-1 85mm f1.5 | 1.4x & 2x teleconverters
