A while back I took a series of shots of a ladybug preparing to take off, and then flying away; until then, I had no idea their wings folded up beneath the shell like that. I just thought they must have short, stubby wings. The things you learn from shooting macro

Nice opportunity shot catching the one wing extended.

Right after they come out of pupation, they stand still on something elevated (often the pupal case) for maybe 45 minutes with wings extended behind them to expand and dry for flight readiness. This one is too brightly marked to have just emerged. I'm guessing that its wings got wet and it felt a need to dry them.
