Nothing better than the SmallHD monitors. Those are the standard for professional tools.

Very happy with my (now discontinued) smallHD DP6. Indispensable for my tripod stills, as well.

i have narrowed down my list to the SmallHD AC7 however, been coming across a lot of reviews about the monitor being very difficult to calibrate.

Huh, I have never tried calibrating my DP6. From what you have been reading, what have they been trying on the AC7 thats making it difficult?

I have been using my Nexus 7 tablet combined with a $25 app from the Play Store called DSLR Controller. The focus assist is as good or better than a lot of very expensive small monitors I have tried in the past. It's not full HD output as this app uses the USB connection to the camera to control all the functions of the camera from the tablet. It is also a very clever app in that it also does stills very well much like Trout Bum uses his SmallHD for. Except you can also use the tablet and app as a remote shutter release as well so as not to shake the camera when doing macro stills or video.

All of that for around $275. Pretty stunning stuff actually!
