I shot with this a 3.5. WOW i have to say 3.5 is completely useless with this lens. I could not believe the difference between 3.5 and 5.6

Apparently it doesn't produce an image at all at that aperture, unless I'm missing something :)

I've never had any problems with mine wide open that were not user error.

I'll have to post some images when I get a chance. No way it is user error.

Set the lens at infinity.. Use a high shutter speed. Keep the lens stable. How can you have user error?

I'm going tell you right now at 3.5 and set to infinity your not going have everything in focus try f8 or f11 at 3.5 you
You still got to turn the focus ring

I have gotten nice sharp shots wide open with this lens. I do find it's really hard to confirm focus through the viewfinder - the best way to use this lens at larger apertures (in my experience anything from f/3.5 - f/8) is to use the distance scale. Anything smaller than f/11, focus at infinity should be fine.

It is funny to watch someone else who is caught unawares by the peculiarities of this lens; I gave my camera to my dad the other day to take a pic of me with my sister on top of the Sears Tower, and all the pictures had his left hand framing the shots because he was frantically trying to focus it before shooting.

When I had this lens it was OK on 3.5 - but with such a wide angle lens, you really want to have everything in focus, because things that are out of focus just look soft, instead of looking out of focus.

So I used at f8 most of the time.

This lens gets my vote for the best fish eye for a crop. User error, unless you post some pics :p

I find that mine copy of this lens isn't worth shooting at wide open either. The resulting photos are just too dang soft. Because I this I really consider this lens as an f/5.6 lens.
