Yes it is that bad... Samples coming....

I had one of these lenses and was sharp as a tack wide open. I think you just got a bad copy.

I'll have to post some images when I get a chance. No way it is user error.

Set the lens at infinity.. Use a high shutter speed. Keep the lens stable. How can you have user error?

Quite simply user error. Did you do your research regarding adjustment of the focus dial? if you havent done it then the focus ring will be incorrect

3 days and no sample? We're a photography site right? i'd love to "see" the problem.

Crop Sensor, 8mm at f3.3 gives Near Focus of about 39" and Depth of Field is Infinite

OH MY ..Don't say user error. If you set the friggin lens on infinity, it should be focused at infinity. That said thanks for you input :).

It’s a real shame that this focal adjustment is even necessary. It should be right out of the box.

Thanks for your input and the interest. I've been busy and shooting the sample is not on my priority list right now. Hopefully I have some down time on Sunday:)

There is definitely a noticeable improvement going from 3.5 to 5.6. So if I make the adjustment. 3.5 get sharper and 5.6 still gets sharper than 3.5. Yeah I need to do the test.

It does sounds like other people are experiencing the softness at 3.5

You have enough time to spend on an internet forum, you surely have enough time to post a picture you've taken already at 3.5 thats obviously been uploaded to your computer.

And I agree, the adjustment shouldnt have to be done, but its a fact of life that you need to. any review online says the same thing. and for the price point, I dont mind taking 3 minutes to do it myself. (mind you I rarely shoot anything but f8 anyways with this lens)

my first copy was not bad wide open, but when I took the lens apart to hack it up I lost the damn tiny ass ball bearing & spring that keeps the aperture ring clickable, without it the ring just freely moves back and forth so I sent it back and got a second copy

the second copy blows wide open... super hazy. now at 5.6 its pretty damn sharp with minimal improvements at f8/11. very strange but i'm fine with it at 5.6

I concur. Mine is soft until (may be) 5.6
I guess f/8 and 11 are the best.
I also find that it is better to keep the lens permanently at infinity.
The focus calibration just tries to sync up the distance scale, it does not do any magic..
Need to do some more tests during the day. But this thing is hard to test (IMHO)

i was going to hack mine to give me more infinity but i'm not reluctant due to the tiny ass ball bearing that they use for the aperture ring. i mean that thing is small.

The issue is the OP says he sets it to infinity and expects it to be infinity when the majority of owners know that infinity on the dial is not correct therefore making an issue.

Talley, you dont need to completely take it apart to correct the rings.

Nothing we can see is at infinity. I don't think I've ever taken a photo of anything with the focus set to infinity
