The "mechanism" is within the outer edge of the main disc-shaped part. Some of those are solid, some have caps/covers each side. The slider pulls back one of the fingers of a C section channel around which the balls can slide. With the finger pulled right in, the ball can escape. The balls are about 3/16ths" or 5mm. I think it's reasonable to say it contains the balls. Though "trap" or somesuch would be a better word. I didn't say "latch" either but again, others did and it sort-of works. You can see how some of the questions could have had many answers. The part which is released by the slider, isn't a key, but it would be if you'd put a key on its ring... The whole thing has the large clip for a belt too, there are about 3 levels of locking/releasing. It's a triumph of engineering beyond common sense. You can achieve very much the same with one big key ring and 6 small ones.

For a while, I was thinking of something along the lines of a gumball machine, a vessel for spheres. This device joins sock monkeys and bat racks in the category of "things new to me." This one may look different on different displays - is the white triangle lower right, just a lighting effect or is it the shape of something? Thank you. The white triangle is a real thing. Its appearance wouldn't change much in different (normally expected) lights. The circle above is also a real thing, but the way it looks in this image is largely due to an optical effect.
