Is it a common item?

I could answer that question "No" or "Yes." If you asked me that in person, I would probably answer "Yes." If Ed or Chris asked me in person, I would probably answer, "Not quite."

Is that because "motor" means different things in different places and I'm American?

It better not be because I'm a mere girl.

It would be very unlikely that anyone would have one of these inside their house. Normally a person with a workshop would not have one of these just laying around, but if they did have one just laying around, it would probably be in a workshop.

It could be in a shed if it was a large enough shed.

No, there are different meanings of motor that would be used differently in regards to this item, but not because of our nationality. As far as I am aware, the definitions of motor are the same to Europeans as it is to Americans.

No, not because you are a girl. The difference is due to their, excuse the term, anal retentive tendencies. Or maybe more to the point, they are worse "hair splitters" in scientific and mechanical subjects than you are. If we were talking about the proper use of grammar, I would expect you to be the hair splitter, and that they would be the ones less likely to notice the difference. The difference is not gender, most likely it is just due to so much exposure to academia.

Probably pretty much universally owned by rural American families.
On an average, I would say most families in first world countries would have at least one.

Well, that's a relief.

So is the pictured item "not quite" part of a motor because it's connected to a motor but it isn't one of the parts that make a motor go?

I am struggling to answer this question. It is both a part of a motor and in another way it is not "part of" a motor. In a way it helps a motor go and in another way it doesn't.

Maybe another question would be simpler to answer. :p
