Is it a connector of any type?

Not like an electrical connector but something does connect with it to make it complete.

When I said connector I was thinking of more of a fastener type connector than electrical one.

Is it a fastener?

Something does fasten to it but maybe not in the way you are thinking.

Does something go inside it?

Would you consider it an alignment guide?
