So if it's broken it contains water .....eh?

Is it something like a bund for a tank ( as in, normally, oil)?

It would need to be in really bad shape to hold water. Most have drain holes in case water gets in and a closing of some sort to keep the water out on the first place. To hold water the drain holes would need to plugged and the closing would need to be open. Even then, one like this particular model would still need to be poorly positioned for the water to even get inside.

It is not designed to hold liquid except for liquid that is already in small containers. Even at that, I can't remember ever using mine to hold a liquid.

Is it on some form of farm implement or vehicle??

No. It is something you most likely have. You probably use one of these almost every day, and if you don't, you probably use something that serves the same function almost daily.

Sizewize, how does he whole thing compare with our shoe box?

Yes. Many of them are close to shoe box size. This one would be about the size of a box that boots made to keep your feet dry in very wet places would come in.

My house is lead and asbestos covered as it's circa 1926. The thing I have that collects a weekday drop off is wood.

Letter box?

Over here that would be a good description of this item. :p

Yes, it is a mailbox. Over here it is one of the iconic mailboxs one sees on the side of the road in most rural and suburban areas.

I have gotten items made of wood by mail before but have never gotten (fire) wood by mail before.

Very much like that one. Main difference is this one is over 50 years old and thus painted in a color that had to be picked by someone who had indulged too much in the recreation of the 60's.

Yeah, I could had invested in a couple more words, but I didn't want to buy more vowels. Vanna get feisty when that happens.

A very small proportion of people in the UK have a box anything like that.
Postie usually comes to the front door and shoves the stuff though a hole with a flappy bit on it.
Sometimes there's a hairy thing on the inside, for those worried about draughts.

The macro was from the section of this image between the rivet holding the flag bracket on the box and the edge of the door.

Here is the mailbox and its post. The white balance is off on the one below. The mailbox is that off green color of the smaller photos, not blueish such as the image below. Sorry I missed that before posting it.

Philip, I thought "mailbox" about the time that you said it was a container but people didn't think of it as one. I could have asked "Is it usually empty at night?" but didn't expect to be around enough of today to answer questions.

Chris, is the entire object metal?
