Smoke detector plate?

You got it!

Bracket for a smoke alarm. The alarm itself is behind it.

The alarm. This one went bad after two years and blasted constantly. That's why it was off the ceiling and available for photos.

Hmm, this side of the pond, those ARE slots, through which a screw goes WITHOUT breaking it, and we would say nothing "clips into or slides through the hole". Whatever!
Smoke alarms are usually on ceilings though, it just didn't occur to me because ours aren't.

Are you alluding to this post? I didn't say nothing goes through any part of the bracket. The question at that time pertained to what the first macro showed, one end of the "smiley" hole. Looking more closely, I think I made a mistake there. It's a slot that goes all the way through the bracket. I thought it had a solid bottom and couldn't be punctured without breakage. But this part of the surface didn't seem to make a difference to identifying the item.

Presumably some part of the alarm slides into that slot. The alarm was sent off for disposal and is no longer available to look at.

Without seeing the actual item, I believe the slot is a slot for a screw. It is a slot instead of a screw so you can position the detector better. I doubt I would have guessed it was a smoke detector if you had answered differently, but it sure would have lead to my asking different questions.

Here is the next macro.

Shampoo sounds like an unfortunate name for a hair product.

If It is knitted, I doubt it was knitted by hand so I will say no. But, I have heard these referred to as socks.
