ECC233 the other way round More info | I honestly have not seen one since I was a kid ... but now I think about it, the structure is not so dissimilar to those window openers that we have in lecture theatres for those very high fanlights. I'll post shortly ... looking for something to rise to the new standards that Chris has set. Ed

There is enough information in this image I believe, but will zoom out if we reach an impasse. Image hosted by forum (1040978) © ECC233 [SHARE LINK] THIS IS A LOW QUALITY PREVIEW. So it is one of the stick things with a kind of hook on the end that you use to unlock and open the ceiling door into a loft area? Does it have a proper name? And as an afterthought, how could it be considered a marital aid (if the revelation will not be too shocking) Exactly - one of those stick things. This one must be 80+ years old. Rubber one end to prod the trap door with, and a hook the other to pull the ladder down. Some use the hook as a sort of key in a latch. The original rubber end had a point, but it had perished bt about 1990.

Well that went a lot faster than I expected. Back to you. It is not for clothes lines! Image hosted by forum (1041058) © ECC233 [SHARE LINK] THIS IS A LOW QUALITY PREVIEW. The original rubber end had a point, but it had perished bt about 1990. I thought it was a good object, but if someone had only ever lived in an apartment it was going to be difficult to guess. As I say, ALL the local houses have lofts, so they must have a trapdoor, etc. Mostly they're in people's upstairs Hall/"landing", but they can happen to be needed in just about any room that's below a roof. The bit which looks like a spring is just the way they made a "stop" so the hook has some support and it protects the end of the wooden pole. I was surprised that once it was extablished as a long thin wooden thing with a metal bit on the end, it was still elusive. I'll post a couple of pictures. Even with the answer, I'm not sure what this thing is... Dave
