That was one thought I had. Does a compass use a magnet? Yes, a very large one! But I was unsure of the science. The compass uses Earth's magnetic field.

I still don't know what the button is for. My husband has a similar compass (different markings, no 3 or C), which he showed me after the game was solved. It's buttonless.

My similar compass has a rectangular button that has a latch holding the mirror down closed.
