The clues point to some component of a heating system, but I'm not familiar with a device that works as described or what it's called.

It's not part of a heating system as such ie. it is a device you buy in a shop or online to reduce your heating bill ie. no need to burn as much fuel..It's a standalone device..

Seems too simple but is it simply a solar powered fan that is controlled by a varister (sp?) or a thermostat?

It's a fan..but the power is different ... not solar, mains or battery

do you want to leave that as the answer, and I can tell you what it is...and how clever it is too...

The only other way I could imagine it is powered would be by heat or an air powered generator that go's up the exhaust vent.

For us users in warmer climates, I think the answer previously is close enough. I doubt it is something many people would buy around here.

Powered by heat is close enough for me...

Answer is an ecofan where the fan spins from electricity (thermo dynamics) produced from the hot base and the cooler top where the fins are...It spreads the heat much lower down instead off from the ceiling down..
You would use one directly on top of the wood or multifuel stove
Plus you burn a lot less fuel...

I have never seen one of those. I do have to wonder just how efficient it is though. That principle doesn't seem like it would produce much air movement at all.

Here is the next macro...

I used the very first image simply because this is the very first image I have ever taken with my new to me 100m L macro (refurb.)
